Dear Al and Mary:
I am writing to tell you how pleased we are with the recent work you did on our house. Of course, my wife and I go back many years with Plum Builders, and we have seen each other through thick and thin.
Our house in Water Mill, which was built in 1971 by the late Gene Futterman, was one of those small, architecturally unique houses that has always presented challenges. When we wanted to add an extra loft room to accommodate the children, we asked Gene to design it and he suggested Plum Builders to build it. Filled with curves and odd angles, it was a demanding job.
I’m sure you’ll recall the headaches we had installing the spiral staircase. It had to curve up two floors to a small “crow’s nest” that led out onto the roof. When the stairs arrived, they didn’t fit. Gene insisted they did fit, but Al was right, they didn’t. Gene had measured incorrectly. Still, Al managed to make the needed alterations without offending the architect’s considerable ego.
Later, we consulted Al about a problem with worn flooring near a set of sliders. His solution: take out the wood, lay down tile, and get an awning to diminish the sunlight. Not only did it improve the appearance of the room, but the awning made our air-conditioning more
efficient. Brilliant!
When last year we suffered substantial damage from a leak, Al replaced the roof, the deck covering the roof, and the sliders leading out onto the deck. The new sliders were not what we expected. Without going
into too much detail, they created a new, and for us inconvenient, traffic pattern.
I gave the matter some thought and discussed it with Al and his foreman Matt. Together, we came up with a solution that required rearranging, but not replacing the sliders, and now we have sliders that suit our needs perfectly.
I guess what I’m saying is that, even when things do not go perfectly in construction—and when do they ever?—you and Al have been wonderful to work with. We would certainly recommend you to our friends.
Sincerely,
Reynolds Dodson
